Michael Smith
Cannabis Industry Pioneer
Michael Smith is a 61-year-old visionary entrepreneur and trailblazer with more than 20 years of experience in the cannabis industry. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for breaking barriers and setting precedents, becoming one of the most influential figures in the legal marijuana space across the United States.
Michael was among the first to open a licensed dispensary in Colorado, positioning himself at the forefront of the emerging legal cannabis movement before most of the country had begun to consider legalization. He later carried that pioneering spirit to Montana, where he was one of only 20 individuals to receive a license and open one of the first licensed dispensaries in Bozeman — a milestone that helped shape the state’s cannabis landscape.
As a seasoned cultivator, Michael has spent two decades growing medical marijuana, developing deep expertise in plant science, regulatory compliance, and premium-quality production. What sets him apart from many growers in the industry is his exclusive commitment to live soil cultivation — a rare and intentional practice that prioritizes the natural biology of the soil to produce a cleaner, more robust, and more authentic product. In an industry often dominated by synthetic nutrients and shortcuts, Michael’s dedication to live soil reflects both his respect for the plant and his commitment to uncompromising quality.
His work extends far beyond retail and cultivation. For 20 years, he has operated marijuana certification centers, helping patients gain legal access to medical cannabis across Montana, Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, and Florida. He is now expanding his mission into Kentucky, bringing his experience and leadership to yet another emerging market.
Michael’s journey has not been without adversity. As a true pioneer operating ahead of the law’s evolving understanding of the industry, he was personally charged by law enforcement in both Montana and Arizona for operating medical marijuana doctor certification clinics. Rather than retreat, Michael used these moments to educate law enforcement on the legal framework governing medical cannabis. In both cases, all charges were ultimately dropped — reinforcing his integrity, legal knowledge, and steadfast commitment to the industry he helped build.
In 2013, Michael made history as the first person in the cannabis industry to advertise on television in Alaska, with commercials airing on both ABC and Fox. It was a bold and groundbreaking step at a time when the industry was still fighting for legitimacy and mainstream acceptance.
Michael Smith’s legacy is defined by courage, resilience, innovation, and a relentless commitment to making cannabis accessible, legal, and respected nationwide.
